(Des Moines, IA) -- Central Iowans are again being asked to reduce their outdoor water use by half.

Central Iowa Water Works is asking customers to voluntarily reduce their lawn watering , citing high nitrates and ongoing strain on the system.

Homeowners and businesses are being asked to avoid watering on Mondays and limit lawn watering to once or twice a week.

“Central Iowa continues to face significant water quality and operational challenges,” said Tami Madsen, Executive Director of CIWW. “Additional conservation efforts are necessary to help reduce stress on the system and support reliable drinking water service for the region.”

CIWW is encourages the following regional even/odd watering schedule:

  • Even-numbered addresses: Sunday, Wednesday or Friday
  • Odd-numbered addresses: Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday

The organization issued its first lawn-watering ban last summer because of high nitrates in the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers.
