(Iowa) -- Students at the University of Iowa could soon be required to take courses through the Center for Intellectual Freedom under a provision in the state budget bill.

The proposal in House File 2800 would add a general education requirement, requiring undergraduate students at Iowa’s three regent universities to complete six credit hours in American history and government to graduate.

While Iowa State and the University of Northern Iowa could meet the requirement through existing civic education centers, the bill says the Center for Intellectual Freedom would be the sole unit able to offer the required courses at the University of Iowa.

The center opened earlier this spring following legislative requirements, but postponed classes due to low student enrollment.

The bill now awaits the governor’s signature.
