(Iowa) -- 34 fuel retailers in Iowa will receive nearly $2 million in state grants to expand access to renewable fuels.

$1,840,727 was awarded Wednesday through the state's Renewable Fuels Infrastructure Program (RFIP), which started in 2007. Lisa Coffelt with the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association says:

"The Renewable Fuels Infrastructure Program was started to help retailers that have to pay totally out of pocket to upgrade their stations to put higher blends of renewable fuels into the pumps for both ethanol and biodiesel."

Retailers must offer E15 and higher blends to qualify for a grant. Since the program started, it has awarded more than $65 million to projects across the state that allow fuel retailers to add the equipment necessary to upgrade their pumps to offer biodiesel.

More information on the RFIP is available at the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship website.
