Iowa National Guard Soldiers Get Help Adjusting To Civilian Life

(IOWA) -- Long after the welcome-home ceremonies are over, Iowa National Guard soldiers are receiving help adjusting to civilian life following their deployment to the Middle East

Lieutenant Colonel Ryan Sextro oversees the Guard's Warrior Family Services Branch. He says returning soldiers are offered help finding jobs, financial counseling and child and youth programming for their kids.

In addition, soldiers suffering from mental trauma also receive counseling at regional Vet Centers around Iowa. He says the Guard offers different services to each returning unit based on command staff recommendations.

250 guardsmen came home to Iowa this month after a nine-month deployment. Their return came just two months after two Iowa National Guard soldiers will killed in an ISIS attack in Syria.
