(Des Moines, IA) -- Heavy snowfall of up to eight inches is expected to fall across a wide swath of Iowa tonight and into Friday morning.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Ashley Bury says the intensity of the snowfall of one to two inches an hour at times will reduce visibility and make the roads hazardous to travel on.
Bury says the heaviest snow is predicted to fall tonight. In Des Moines, blustery winds and four to eight inches of snow are predicted.
Sleet that turned into snow created slippery conditions on the roads during the afternoon commute.
Some Central Iowa school districts have delayed classes for two hours on Friday, including Ames, Boone, Johnston, Madrid, Marshalltown, Norwalk and Winterset.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Western, Central and Northeast Iowa until 6:00 am on Friday.
