(Marion, IA) -- The bench trial of a man from Marion who admitted to investigators that he strangled his 5-year-old son is set to begin in Linn County today.

Matthew Schleier is charged with the first-degree murder of his son Jack almost a year-and-a-half ago.

Court documents say Schleier also told officers he had been planning to kill the boy for a week.

Schleier waived his right to a jury trial.

Court records show he's pleaded not guilty and is pursuing an insanity defense.
