(Des Moines, IA) -- Super‑speeders in Iowa may soon face tougher penalties.

“More and more people have been speeding or driving recklessly on Iowa’s roadways. This is an issue whether you’re a cyclist or whether you’re a driver, and we all stand to benefit if we can tamp down on this, the same way reducing distracted driving is saving many, many lives,” said Luke Hoffman, Executive Director of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, who has been lobbying for the bill.

Senate File 2030 would raise fines to at least $285 for drivers caught going more than 100 miles per hour, or for anyone traveling 20 miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit.

Speeders could also face license revocation.

The bill has passed out of committee and is now moving forward in the Iowa Legislature.
