The Dallas Cowboys announced the firing of defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus after just one season on their official website Tuesday (January 6).

The Cowboys' confirmation came shortly after ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the move.

"Sources: Dallas Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. Cowboys now will be going on their fourth different defensive coordinator in four seasons," Schefter wrote on his X account.

Eberflus, 55, who had previous worked for the Cowboys as a linebackers coach from 2011 to 2017 and a passing game coordinator from 2016 to 2017, was re-hired last January after three seasons as the Chicago Bears' head coach. Dallas ranked last among all 32 NFL teams in scoring defense with 30.1 points allowed per game and 30th in total defense with 377 yards allowed per game.

"I mean, I'm the defensive coordinator ... The accountability is with me," Eberflus said prior to the Cowboys' Week 18 loss to the NFC East Division rival New York Giants.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones previously hinted at firing Eberflus, his fourth coordinator in as many years

"I might not couch it as difficult," Jones said while addressing a possible change at the position. "It's certainly something that we have to do. And that is to look at the entire year and look at what our options are, and how to correct it so we're not here at the same time next year. Now, that's not uncommon to evaluate at this time of the year — your entire coaching staff.

"And, obviously, the target is on him because of our statistical, as well as actual play on the defensive side of the ball, but that goes with it."
