(Iowa) -- The ongoing legal challenge to Iowa's restrictions on school library books has left educators uncertain about compliance.

The two-year-old law requires school libraries to contain only “age-appropriate” materials and restricts content related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

A U.S. District Court judge has limited or blocked much of the restrictions, which has led to confusion and self-censorship among school districts.

The case has been appealed to the 8th Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals to determine the next steps for Iowa schools.
