(Des Moines, IA) -- A beloved Des Moines middle school teacher is being mourned after passing away unexpectedly on October 15.
According to the Des Moines Public Schools, Patrick Brennan taught social studies at Merrill Middle School. Brennan grew up in Des Moines, graduating from Dowling High School and then Drake University.
"Patrick poured his heart and soul into those around him. He made sure his family and his students felt loved, valued, important, and worthy of all the good things in this world. Unfortunately, this meant he didn’t save enough of this love and value for himself. He carried the world on his shoulders and for reasons unknown couldn’t find a way out of the darkness."

According to Brennan's obituary, a celebration of life is planned for Sunday, October 19 at Merrill Middle School from 2-4 p.m.
A GoFundMe for the married father of two has raised 25-thousand dollars so far.

Merrill will have counselors available for students. Brennan was 40 years old.
