(Des Moines, IA) -- A Congressman from Wisconsin is being credited with helping save an 11-year-old boy's life after a serious crash in Iowa.
Representative Derrick Van Orden, a retired Navy SEAL, says he saw a minivan crash into a semi-truck on Interstate 35 on Saturday. Van Orden says he used his combat medic training to apply makeshift tourniquets to the boy, who had severe leg and arm injuries.
Other motorists also stopped to help control traffic and provide aid until paramedics arrived. The boy and his mother were airlifted to Des Moines hospitals, and the boy is reportedly in stable condition.
