(Des Moines, IA) -- The Iowa Senate is approving a bill that would require 80-percent of students admitted to the University of Iowa's medicine and dentistry programs to have ties to the state.

The goal of the bill's proponents is to fill shortages in Iowa's health care system, but opponents say they're concerned it will discourage out-of-state students from attending UI, and favor less qualified students.

The Senate amended the House version to expand who qualifies as having Iowa ties, so the House needs to reapprove the bill before it goes to the Governor's desk.
