Another morning that I awoke to a mass shooting in Colorado, 10 people dead including a responding police officer, I slowly turned my head and looked at my wife and was thankful she retired. She served our community as an officer and eventually a sergeant causing me many days of stress even though I knew she had the best training available and worked with other dedicated professionals. I did numerous ride alongs trying to understand what she and her fellow officers faced only to come home with a wake up call as to how people disrespected those who protect and serve. We live in a hostile environment where law enforcement comes into highly unpredictable situations, I often found sleep to be elusive every time I heard a siren until the time she was safely home. Even now when she no longer is on the job I think about our friends and their families that are, whisper a little prayer and close my eyes.
