Dodging the Dodgers

There is some debate as to whether baseball is truly our national sport, having grown up with it there has never been any question. Now there have been times that it has fallen out of favor especially the decision to move my beloved Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles in 1957, "movin' dos bums to the left coast was a slap in da soup coolers". I had to let go and seek another team. My brother's desperately tried to convert me to the Cubs but that wasn't going to happen. I was the families rebel, you know, I was the Cyclone amongst the Hawkeyes as one example. I roamed for awhile, White Sox, Indians etc. but one day my mind was made up by another. One of my Senior League pitchers made it to the BIG LEAGUES with the Pittsburgh Pirates and I've been there ever since. The transition was easy I was always a Steelers fan and now I'd have the complete package. My second team has always been the Yankees, I think it had to do with still having a team in New York and it sure as hell wasn't going to be the Mets. As for my brothers team the Cubs, I've given in a little I do root for the Iowa Cubs. I'm a traditionalist, 2 ways to enjoy baseball, on the radio with the great announcers like Fred White with the Royals, Merle Harmon with the Twins, Harry Carey and the Cubs I had the honor of shaking hands and thanking them in person before they passed. There was only one pair of television announcers I really enjoyed, Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese two down home old players that not only called the game but entertained us with memories in between. My gourmet meal will always be hot dogs and cold beer amongst my friends at the ballpark as we prepare to harmonize in our rendition of "Take me out to the ballgame!"
