Ames Schools responds to claims of racist chant

The Ames School District is responding to allegations that students directed racist chants at the Des Moines North boys basketball team during a postseason game against Ames High Tuesday night. Superintendent Jenny Risner and high school principal Spence Evens say in an email sent to district parents the chants were hurtful, regardless of intent. They say they'll use the incident as a "teachable moment" as part of an ongoing effort to build a district that prepares thoughtful and respectful citizens.
