Paving Blocks To Be Removed From Main Street

Ames public works officials are planning to eliminate paving blocks that have been part of downtown streetscaping for two decades. Operations manager Justin Clausen says the pavers haven't held up to the weather, adding they heave a lot during the winter and de-icing chemicals during the winter are eating them from underneath. Clausen says the pavers will be replaced by more durable stamped and colored concrete, similar to what's in place on 5th street to the north of Main. Clausen says the paver replacement starts next spring on Main Street between Clark and Burnett Avenues. He says it'll take four years to complete all of Main Street.
