Campustown pedestrian project ends medians

Street crews are completing work on the first phase of a Campustown pedestrian safety project.  Ames Police Cmdr. Geoff Huff says the city's made good on a traffic safety study that suggested the removal of raised medians on Lincoln Way at Welch and Hayward avenues. He says they want pedestrians, the bulk of whom are Iowa State students, to wait for crossing signals, then go from one side of Lincoln Way to the other, all in one move. The safety study found that just 35 percent of pedestrians complied with traffic signals at the Welch Ave. intersection.
