Ames downtown gateway zone considered

The Ames City Council voted Tuesday to establish rezoning boundaries for a proposed downtown gateway area.  The council defined the area on Lincoln Way from Grand to Duff Ave., and the railroad tracks to a half-block south of Lincoln Way.  A Des Moines law firm, representing 18 business owners in the area, has filed a formal protest to the rezoning. Second Ward Council Member Tim Gartin says the entire rezoning discussion is rife with rumor and misinformation about the effect it will have on businesses.  He says while businesses will be non-conforming under the rezoning, owners can continue operations as normal.  The council will consider a formal rezoning ordinance when it meets in June.
