Sports betting won't have big economic effect

An Iowa State University economist says the state is unlikely to see a huge economic windfall if sports betting is made legal. Dave Swenson says money spent on other forms of entertainment would likely be redirected to sports gambling. He says the only way Iowa really benefits from the addition of sports betting is if it keeps money here that may have left for Nevada or on-line sports wagering. A number of state lawmakers have promised to introduce legislation next year making sports betting legal in Iowa.
