City of Ames officials say a fire in a bathroom at Brookside Park did $50,000 in damage. Firefighters were called to the park just before 3:00 Saturday morning to find the interior of the stone restroom building in flames. Investigators say the fire likely started in a nearby garbage can before spreading to the wood awning and into the roof, which collapsed in several areas. Both the men’s and women’s restrooms are closed, and portable toilets are available to park users. Parks and Recreation staff will bring in structural experts to evaluate the building and develop a plan to return restroom facilities to the park. The fire remains under investigation.
