Corbett talks mental health in Story County

The Republican challenger for Iowa Governor made a stop in Story County Thursday to discuss mental health issues. Cedar Rapids mayor Ron Corbett talked to Sheriff Paul Fitzgerald and members of the Story County Mental Health Task Force. He says law enforcement officials have been pushed to the front lines of mental health care at the cost of local taxpayers. Corbett says the closure of two state mental health facilities in Mount Pleasant and Clarinda made the problem worse by also passing the cost of that care on to already cash-strapped counties. Corbett wants at least 25 beds added to remaining Iowa mental health facilites. He says those beds should be reserved for people who might have a hard time finding help elsewhere.
