Iowa sees rising crime rates

A new report says four major categories of crime are being committed more often in Iowa. Corrections Department director Jerry Bartruff told Gov. Reynolds Wednesday the FBI crime report showed the number of homicides, aggravated assaults, rapes, and robberies went up in the last ten years. The rising recidivism rate is also concerning to Bartruff as he talked about the cost of keeping someone behind bars. Under the department's proposed budget, staffing wouldn't increase and the amount of money would only increase by $1 million.
