Ames man sentenced for tax fraud

An Ames man has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison for wire fraud and tax fraud. Lony Tap Gatwas, 48, has also been ordered to pay more than $130,000 in restitution to the IRS. A jury found Gatwas guilty of four counts of wire fraud, seven counts of identity theft, and seven counts of tax fraud. During his trial, prosecutors said Gatwas padded income tax returns with extra dependents, using his and other kids' names on his clients' returns. Gatwas then charged clients up to $2,000 for each false dependent.
