Ames parking rates to increase

It'll be more expensive to plug a parking meeting in Ames next fiscal year. The City Council Tuesday approved increasing meter rates to a $1 an hour for two-hour parking, $.75 for four-hour parking, and $.50 cents for 10-hour parking. City Manager Steve Schainker says the increases are needed to fund parking lot improvements, though he admits they won't be popular with Main St. businesses.  Also, Police Chief Chuck Cychosz asked the council to explore new parking meters that allow credit card payments. The council will also consider creating "event parking zones" during Iowa State football games. It's currenty cheaper to pay a ticket for parking illegally near Jack Trice Stadium than it is to park in ISU lots.
