State investigating second prison guard assault

More information is now known about an assault on a staff member at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison.  The Iowa Department of Corrections says the staff member was taken to Iowa City for treatment and is in stable condition.  Inmate Keith Piper is accused of using two homemade weapons in the assault.  He' serving a 45-year sentence at the facility. It's the second staff assault in a week--the first occurred last Saturday.  The labor union representing Iowa correctional officers accuses the Corrections Department of failing to provide a safe environment for inmates and staff. In a statement, the Corrections Department says security is it's highest priority, and it continues to investigate the incident.
