The Ames City Council gave first-reading approval, Tuesday, to an amended measure imposing a six-month moritorium on new rental property applications. It's designed to give the council time to figure out new ways to regulate rental properties after the a state law change took away a family relationship standard. The amended moritorium applies to neighborhoods near the Iowa State University campus. Fourth Ward council member Chris Nelson proposed the change, saying a city-wide moritorium was too broad. He also says the while the moritorium puts a pause on new rentals in those neighborhoods, it won't end them. The council will hold second, and possibly third, readings of the amended moritorium at it's Oct. 10th meeting.
