Florida man faces Ames charges in debit card theft

A Florida man faces charges for stealing thousands of dollars in gift cards from an Ames department store this summer.  Police say Quinton Antuan McNair, 25 of Tampa, FL, was arrested this week in Orgeon. He's charged with 2nd-degree theft, accused of stealing more than $3,000 in prepaid debit cards from the S. Duff Ave. Walmart. Police say McNair went into the store July 30 and tried to purchase prepaid cards. During the transaction, he allegedly distracted the clerk causing her to turn away. McNair allegedly reached over the counter and pressed the “cash” button on the register. When the clerk turned back around, McNair had his own credit card out, acting as if he'd swiped it. He then left the store with more than $3,100 loaded onto the cards. Police say McNair had warrants for his arrests from a similar incident in Carroll. Story County Jail officials say he was extradited after being picked up on a warrant in Portland, OR.
