The Ames City Council will consider major changes to the city's rental housing code after state law struck down the ability to regulate occupancy based on family relationship. Among issues under consderation--hiring of another city inspector. Fire Chief Shawn Bayouth, who's department handles inspections, says right now they've got two inspectors to handle 13,000 rental properties and increased enforcement will increase the workload. The council also directed city staff to draft a six-month moritorium on issuing new rental permits in Campustown neighborhoods. Members of the South Campus Area Neighborhood say more than 40 percent of the hoses there are rentals. Staff will also draft a change in the renatal housing code limiting occupancy to no more than three Iowa State University students.
