An Iowa State University economist says some perspective is important as state government and economic development officials celebrate Thursday's announcement that Apple will build a data center in Waukee. Dave Swenson the $1.4 billion Apple wil spend sounds impressive, but has less overall effect on the economy than the creation of new jobs. As for new jobs, Swenson says state and local governments are giving up $207 million in tax incentives to create just 50 jobs. He hopes Iowans also understand that those tax breaks are being used to lure a company with $285 billion in cash.
