The City of Ames will hire three new city engineers, while having only budgeted for two. The City Council gave it's OK Tuesday night to the hiring of a third engineer City Manager Steve Schainker says is needed to keep up with city business. He says most of the engineer's $112,000 annual salary will come from Capital Improvements projects. Schainker says road use tax and regional planning authority funds will pick up the rest of the salary. He says one caveat with a third city engineer--the position will be funded as long as there's work to be done. In other action Tuesday, the council approved $34,000 in downtown facade improvement grants for three properties.
