Local youth survey shows reduced substance use

An Ames prevention specialist says there's good news regarding substance abuse in the 2016 Iowa Youth Survey. YSS's Denise Denton says the percentage of sixth, eighth, and 11th graders who say they had consumed alcohol in the prior 30 days fell five percent from 2014 from 13 percent to eight percent.  She says the use of tobacco, marijuana, and illegal perscription drugs were also down. Denton says a common theme with young people who said they were reluctant to use was parents who made it clear the behavior was unacceptable. She says parental disapproval of substance abuse was far more important to respondents than peer disapproval.
