Ames' police chief says fireworks calls increased seven fold during the first period of legalized fireworks in Iowa. Chuck Cychosz points out, though, that the numbers don't tell the whole story. He says many residents showed patience by not calling in fireworks violations right away and many calls came late at night. Cychosz is hoping Iowa follows the pattern of other states that legalized fireworks. In many instances, fireworks problems spiked the first year but tapered off after that. Cychosz says the department focused on educating residents about the city's fireworks laws but cautions they'll issue more citations if problems continue.
