Local fireworks sale permits in process

Legalized fireworks are back and a handful of shops in central Iowa are preparing to meet demand.  The Iowa Fire Marshal's Office says 12 businesses have applied for sales licenses in Story County.  Four have applied in Boone County.  Six applicants are national chains while the rest are one-off stands or part of statewide companies.  As of Saturday, only three have licenses to sell fireworks while the others are waiting for final state approval. The use of  fireworks had been outlawed for decades until the legislature and former governor Terry Branstad approved a bill establishing private sales of fireworks.
