Law enforcement across Iowa will increase seatbelt enforcement over Memorial Day weekend and the weeks that follow. Iowa's seat belt use of 94 percent is one of the highest in the nation, but the remaining six percent of vehicle occupants account for about half of all traffic deaths. Authorities are also looking to debunk some myths about wearing seatbelts. Statistics from National Highway Traffic Safety reveal that being unbuckled in a pickup truck is more dangerous than in a passenger car and more people are killed sitting unrestrained in the backseat than unrestrained in the front seat. In addition, country driving is not safer than in urban areas.
