Branstad signs criminal code update

Iowa's criminal code is getting an update. Governor Branstad signed a bill containing multiple changes to sentencing laws Wednsday, including getting rid of mandatory minimum sentences for someone convicted of possessing cocaine. Parole and work release are also pushed in the bill as a way to avoid sending drug offenders to prison. The law also says a sentence of up to 25 years must be served in its entirety if a peace officer is targeted for murder.
