The top administrator in the Ames School District says the school board, and public, have a big decision to make on high school building costruction. Superintendent Tim Taylor says they have a better idea of the costs and timelines associated with renovation and expansion of the existing, or construction of a new high school. He says the old building comes with a smaller price tag--between $82 and $87 million, but will cost more to maintain in years to come. As for a new high school, he admits there is some sticker shock on a building that could cost anywhere from $95 to $105 million. Whichever option is chosen, Taylor says the district would not have to ask for a bond issue--more tax money--to complete.
