Ames' mayor says city staffers will be busy the next few months trying to assess how new state laws will affect local control. Ann Campbell says the Planning and Zoning department and the City Attorney's office are working on changes in housing occupancy rules that no longer let Ames use family relationships to determine the number of people in a rental property. She says she directly asked the governor to veto the bill. Instead, he signed it into law on Friday. Campbell says the Iowa League of Cities' lobbyist has warned that more efforts to dilute local control could come in the next legislative session.
