Council considers annexation, pay raises

The Ames City Council faces an issue Tuesday the mayor says it doesn't relish. Ann Campbell says the council will consider annexing nearly 83 acres of land in north Ames, where owners of 18 percent of the property don't want to come into the city. She says state law allows for involuntary annexation if owners of 80 percent of land in the area agree to come in to the city. Campbell says the council will also consider pay increases for the mayor and council that would take effect next year. Under the proposal, the mayor's annual pay would be increased from $8,000 to $11,000 and council members would get a raise from $7,000 to $10,000.
