Ames police await gun law guideance

A top Ames Police Department administrator says there's a great deal of uncertainty about how new gun laws in Iowa will effect local law enforcement. Cmdr. Geoff Huff says the department will rely on the guidance of the county and city attorneys offices on what the new law means for Ames. He says when it comes to the new law's "stand your ground" provision allowing a gun owner to use deadly force if they reasonably believe their life is in danger, the word "reasonable" is very important.  He says it will ultimately be up to a jury to decide whether or not that use of force was, in fact, reasonable. Huff says the department also has questions about provisions that could remove civil liabilities from the use of deadly force. He says law enforcement agencies want to know if that pertains only to private citizens or officers as well.
