Senate passes voter I.D. bill

Iowa will likely have a new voter ID law on the books.  The Senate voted 28-21 Thursday to send the bill to Governor Branstad.  It requires a person to show some sort of photo ID in order to vote.  A free ID would be issued to anybody who doesn't have one. Provisions in the bill also shorten the state's early voting period to 29 days instead of 40, and voters would no longer have the option to check a box and vote for all of a party's nominees.
