I am often told that be thankful that your wife is a police sergeant in Ames Iowa and not some big metropolitan area where trouble abounds and I say in this day and age trouble has no boundaries. This Saturday night what started as a fight in Campustown turned into a drive by shooting with 3 people suffering gunshot wounds and later discovered that the alleged perpetrators were also wounded by police as they fled the scene in their car. If you know Campustown you understand that a rare warm February night will fill the streets with revelers celebrating early Spring. The time was 1:30 am when the owners of beloved adult beverage libation parlors (bars) begin their songs of closing, "Last Call! You don't have to go home but you can't stay here" and Welch Avenue fills with young people of various demeanors. This could have been so much worse but thankfully 2 officers patrolling on foot were near the scene and able to deter further firing by taking defensive action. It is no longer the size of the town you live in that will keep you safe but the abilities of a well trained and professional law enforcement group of men and women who put their lives on the line every day to serve and protect this community and many others like it across the nation. All hero's are not serving overseas some are fighting evil on the streets of America.
