(West Des Moines, IA) -- Larry Spencer served more time as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War than any other Iowan. Spencer was a U.S. Navy radar officer in the war, captured when his jet was shot down over North Vietnam in 1966.

He was held prisoner for nearly seven years, and subjected to extreme cruelties by the North Vietnamese military, according to the Hall of Valor Project.

Spencer grew up in Earlham, and had been living in West Des Moines. He was 82 years old.

Spencer's visitation and funeral will be held Tuesday May 31 at Lutheran Church of Hope 925 Jordan Creek Parkway in

West Des Moines. He'll be interred at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.
