Iowa judge blocks mandatory 24-hour waiting period for abortion

The Des Moines Register reports an Iowa judge is permanently blocking a state law mandating a 24-hour waiting period before getting an abortion.

Republican Governor Kim Reynolds signed the measure into law into law last year.

In the ruling, the judge found the measure was similar to a 72-hour wait period on abortions that the Iowa Supreme Court struck down in 2018.

Governor Reynolds issued a statement saying "An Iowa district court wrongly struck down our efforts to protect all innocent human life," and that they plan to appeal the decision.

Iowa Democratic Party Chair Ross Wilburn said "We're grateful the district court saw right through Governor Reynolds' unconstitutional attempt to attack the reproductive rights of Iowans."
