Hot Iowa temps heat pavement, putting pets' paws at risk

(Des Moines, IA) -- It's been so hot lately, that the Animal Rescue League of Iowa's warning about burned paws. The A-R-L near Des Moines says when it's close to 90-degrees, asphalt temperatures can be over 140-degrees. The A-R-L says a dog's paws can burn in less than one minute on such a hot surface. They suggest you walk the dog on the grass to protect their paws.

The ARL says even on a 77-degree day asphalt temps have measured as high as 125 degrees .

The ARL suggests pressing the back of your hand firmly against the asphalt (or concrete) for 7 seconds before walking your dog on it. If it’s not comfortable for you, it could potentially harm your pup.
