Iowa to Get $1.5 Billion in Federal Pandemic Recovery Money

IOWA - Iowa is getting $1.5 billion under President Biden's American Rescue Plan.

The number is based in unemployment numbers in each state and is part of the $2 trillion COVID-19 relief package enacted earlier this year.

The money can be used to cover health costs and money lost from the pandemic, but cannot be used to offset new tax cuts.

Numerous Republican controlled states, including Iowa, have criticized the tax restriction as an infringement on their powers.

Twenty-one Republican state attorneys general have filed a lawsuit over the tax restriction.

The relief money can also not be used to shore up state pension funds.

A White House Fact Sheet outlines accepted uses for the stimulus money.

Unlike a COVID-19 relief package passed last year, $350 billion in the new plan will be divided among local governments as well as whole states. The breakdown is listed below:

States & District of Columbia $195.3 billion

Counties $65.1 billion

Metropolitan Cites $45.6 billion

Tribal Governments $20.0 billion

Territories $4.5 billion

Non-Entitlement Units of Local Government $19.5 billion
