Iowa Improves Vaccination Rate as New Group is Eligible for Vaccine

IOWA - Iowa is gaining among states for its delivery of COVID-19 vaccines to people.

It's now tied for 9th in getting out the first dose, although it still ranks near the bottom for second doses.

The single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine is now available in Iowa.

It's currently being given out in 17 counties with a high number of frontline workers who can't socially distance on the job.

The rollout of vaccines to people 64 and younger with underlying conditions begins today, but a number of counties are delaying the expansion.

Polk, Linn and Buchanan counties say they're not ready to start vaccinating the new group.

Linn and Buchanan counties have logistical and planning issues while Polk County is holding off on vaccines for the new group until it vaccinates 70 percent of people 65 and older.

There's also concern about verifying that people actually have underlying conditiona. Vaccine providers say they've been given no guidance from the state on any verification process.
