Iowa researchers predict COVID-19 study results by end of year

(Iowa City, IA) -- Research continues on the COVID-19 treatment Remdesivir in Iowa City. Dr. Alejandro Commellas of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics say they've had a good response recruiting patients who have tested positive for the virus. He say they are still recruiting patients for the trials of the medication.

Dr. Commellas says he's hopeful that by the end of the year, they may have results to share about the safety of the medication and it's efficacy.

UI Hospitals was the first in the state to participate in the international clinical trial. It's for patients age 12 and over who meet specific criteria.

PMG Research of McFarland Clinic in Ames is also taking part in a COVID 19-treatment. The anti-viral, by Regeneron, is given thru an I-V.

The treatment is given to those who have recently been exposed or infected with the virus. Dr. Jennifer Killion says they're trying to learn if it prevents people from getting sicker or getting sick at all. She says they're also researching whether it will prevents them from spreading the virus.

Dr. Killion says they started the trial a couple of months ago and are still enrolling participants. Participants must be at least 18-years old.
