An investigation is underway after police in Bettendorf say one of their officers fatally shot a man on Thursday.

A media release from Bettendorf Police Officer Keith Kimball says that just before noon, officers were called to the 1000 block 16 ½ Street for a report of someone bleeding and a person who was holding a knife to the throat of a 4 year old child.

Kimball says multiple officers responded to the home and once inside, an officer engaged with a man holding a sharp-edged weapon. There were multiple young children present, Kimball said.

The release states that an officer fired his weapon at the man, hitting him once. Kimball says the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released the man’s name, only identifying him as a 53 year old man. Per department policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave and his name will not be released until he has been formally interviewed by the Iowa DCI. Kimball says no one else was injured during the incident and there is no threat to the general public.

Kimball says following the shooting, the Iowa DCI was contacted and the investigation was turned over to them. No other details have been released.
