Record cold in Iowa, big chill continues MAPS

DES MOINES, Iowa - Des Moines set a new record cold low today for the date, -21, breaking the old record of -17. The high temperature for the day is also expected to set a new record for the coldest high, at -10.

Ames also set a new record low, -22, according to WHO TV Meteorologist Jeriann Ritter.

The cold temperatures aren’t the only issue, the wind chills are extreme.

The coldest wind chills were recorded overnight in Estherville and Mason City, with both at -59. Des Moines’ coldest wind chill was -46 recorded at 2:00 a.m. Wednesday.

And, if Iowa isn't cold enough for you, the actual temperature was -35 this morning in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and in North Central Minnesota, the town of Park Rapids had the coldest temperature in America at -42, with a wind chill of -65.

A Wind Chill Warning is in effect across the entire State of Iowa through this afternoon.

The Warning will end at 6:00 p.m. for Central Iowa and the Des Moines Metro, and continue until 10:00 a.m. Thursday for Northern Iowa.
