DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa's fetal heartbeat law is in court Friday morning.
Planned Parenthood is asking the court to overturn the new law that bans abortion if a fetal heartbeat can be detected by a doctor. That's around six weeks into a pregnancy. Planned Parenthood argues that the law violates a woman's constitutional right to abortion under Iowa state law, but specifically doesn't challenge U.S. abortion laws.
Some of those who want to ban abortion in Iowa are hoping to see the new Iowa law appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court... in hopes of overturning Roe v. Wade.
"Well, I'd rather win in district court, and the other side would have to appeal." Says Chuck Hurley with the Family Leader, an Urbandale faith-based group that opposes abortion. "But, yeah, it'll be appealed."
